Habitat for Humanity
Mt. Calvary has a long tradition of partnership with Habitat for Humanity in Boulder County. Habit for Humanity’s mission is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make simple, decent housing a matter of conscience and action. They don’t believe in “handouts” but rather encourage a “hand up,” and they put that policy into action by requiring future homeowners to provide hundreds of hours of sweat equity into their homes and to pay for their homes with affordable financing options.
Mt. Calvary has assisted with over $15,000 in contributions, many times matched by Thrivent Financial, and countless volunteer hours. We have worked on townhouses in north Boulder, affordable homes in Broomfield, adobe-style houses in Alamosa, Colorado, and two neighborhoods in Longmont. Our volunteer efforts result in the satisfaction of immediate results on the houses we work on and the joy of sharing a hard days work with Mt. Calvary members, other Habitat volunteers, and the future owners of the houses we work on.
Most recently, Mt. Calvary had an excellent day volunteering at the Habitat for Humanity work site in Longmont in July. Mt. Calvary volunteers helped put up the forms for the concrete foundation on one house and worked on framing a house a little farther along in the process. We all had a very satisfying day despite the July heat!
